Our circadian rhythm is also known as our biological or internal clock. It is a 24-hour cycle that regulates our sleep and awake time and our routines such as eating, brain wave activity, hormone production, cell regeneration, and other important biological processes. A healthy circadian rhythm is foundational for strong mental and physical health. Unfortunately, artificial light has brought major disruption to our circadian rhythm.
Today's widely adopted artificial light sources, such as LED and incandescent, have brought many benefits to modern life like extending hours of productivity and seeing more clearly indoors. But it comes with a cost. It disrupts our circadian rhythm which has been linked to medical issues such as depression, obesity, certain forms of cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Natural light improves our mood. That's why professionals recommend opening the blinds first thing in the morning, enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch, or getting outdoors for at least thirty minutes a day. Full spectrum lighting, such as that of the sun, reveals the true colors of the world that surrounds us leading to a more positive, healthy mindset.
