Sunlight = Vitamin D
One of the number one benefits of sunlight is the essential vitamin it helps your body create- Vitamin D! Vitamin D is produced by ultraviolet light from the sun and cholesterol in your skin and is essential for your overall health. Improving bone and muscle health, regulating your metabolism, protecting against inflammation, and helping to improve brain function are just some of the many benefits directly associated with vitamin D levels. Spending time in the sunshine is the best way to ensure you are getting enough vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin.”
Sunlight Helps to Improve Sleep
Maintaining a normal and healthy sleep cycle is one of the best ways to improve your overall health and sunlight is one of the most important regulators for sleep. Research suggests that morning sunlight exposure is linked to better sleep and health. Your eyes need help to set your body’s internal clock; sunlight gives your body gets a clear signal that it’s no longer night, shutting down melatonin production, maintaining normal circadian rhythm.
Prevent and Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a form of depression that is brought about by changing seasons, specifically due to the decrease in sunlight. Decreased sun exposure is associated with a drop in the body’s serotonin levels, the hormone known for causing feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Being outside in the sunshine will help your body prevent and treat Seasonal Affective Disorder!
Sun Exposure Lowers Blood Pressure
The effects of sunlight on blood pressure is a more recently studied concept, but the initial findings are very promising for those with high blood pressure (hypertension). When sunlight hits your skin, your body releases something called nitric oxide into your blood. This compound brings down blood pressure and improves heart health. Maintaining healthy blood pressure can reduce your risks of cardiac disease and stroke, decreasing these risks can prolong your life by years! The discovery of nitric oxide release was important because until then it was thought that sunlight’s only health benefits to humans was to stimulate production of vitamin D.
Sunshine is One of the Best Ways to Improve Mood
As discussed above and in previous articles, one of the top benefits of sunlight exposure is the release of the hormone serotonin. The happiness and wellbeing hormone does not just help prevent and treat Seasonal Affective Disorder; it also improves overall mood! When light enters the eye, it stimulates neurons in the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that influences mood. Natural light has been shown to increase alertness and overall productivity, as well as help to create an inner calm, which leads to the ability to focus.
Given all the many benefits of natural sunlight, when you can’t be out in the sunshine the next best thing is technology that replicates natural sunlight. Until recently, such technology didn’t exist. In fact much of our artificial lighting technology was potentially damaging to health and wellness. OLED light technology is different.
Advancements in OLED lighting are helping to make an artificial, healthy light, commercially available for use in residential and hospitality spaces. OLED light panels have the closest spectral power distribution to natural light of any other artificial light source. They emit a warm and pleasant glare free light, with natural color reproduction. The goal of artificial lighting should be to replicate natural lighting to increase productivity and maximize health and wellness benefits.
Although the goal should always be to get as much natural light as possible, OLED technology is the next best thing!
